It seems today that radio controlled models, toys & gifts can be enjoyed by all age groups. But has this always been the case. radio controlled cars were only available from 1967 in kit form only and were really only aimed at children. It wasn't until the 1980's that radio controlled car competitions started that RC cars really took off and radio conrol cars were at last deemed for all ages. Today you can buy radio controlled cars from beginer right through to hobby-grade "ready-to-run" (or "RTR") models. radio controlled cars & racing is not only a male dominated hobby. There is now an increasing number of women who are addicted to radio controlled cars.
The first fully controllable radio controlled helicopter was built by Dr. Dieter Schluter of West Germany in 1968. However, it wasn't until the 1970's that the first model helicopters in kit form were on sale. Today there are a great many radio controlled helicopter enthusiasts. There are lots of radio controlled helicopter flying competitons, one form of radio controlled helicopter flying is called 3D. During 3D flying, helicopters perform advanced aerobatics, sometimes in a freestyle form, or in a predetermined set of moves drawn up by the organisers of the competition. There are a number of 3D competitions around the world, two of the best known being the 3D Masters in the UK and the eXtreme Flight Championship (XFC) in the USA. Although people just generally use radio control helicopters for pleasure, they can also be used for other things such as low altitude aerial photography, filming, policing, and remote observation or inspection and there are companies out there who design radio controlled helicopters especially for this purpose.
Radio controlled planes became popular in the 1950's though not as we know them today. It wasn't until the 1970's that radio control planesreally 'took off' with the planes becoming more contollable. The world's largest radio controlled airplane contest was held in 2008 in Lakeland, Florida, with the 20th anniversary of the competition. A total of 125 participants competed over a period of five days.
If you like water then radio controlled boats, submarines & hovercrafts are just the thing. Some boats have speeds of up to 35 mph. Just the thing if you love speed. But as with all things its not always about speed some people just enjoy a leisurly day sailing their boat. There are a lots of radio controlled competitions competitions such as racing, building, and even mock wars. There are radio controlled battle ships available that let radio controlled enthusiasts wage war on their competitors in a scaled down version of "You sank my battleship!" The best way to locate these types of events will be to contact the local radio controlled club, even if it's not a radio controlled boat club, they will point you in the right direction.
There are a fantastic selection of radio controlled toysnow available, everything from Airships to Galatic Flyers to Sumo Wrestlers even Daleks and Robots. there are now also quite a number of radio controlled toys now aimed at girls, which wasn't always the case.
Everyone can benift from a radio controlled gift of some kind, even if its a radio controlled watch - you need never be late again.
The most exciting thing will be to see how far radio controlled models, toys & gifts will be developed and where it will take us. I for one can't wait.
